Context

Conditions that change the method

  • Delicate surface — Always scrub in the direction of the stainless steel factory brush grain to prevent micro-scratches.

What you need

  • Baking soda (gentle non-scratch scouring agent)
  • Distilled white vinegar or lemon juice / citric acid (chemically dissolves iron oxide)
  • Non-scratch sponge or microfiber cloth
  • Clean water
  1. Rinse the sink basin and wipe away excess water so the rust spots or rings are clearly exposed.
  2. Mix baking soda with enough distilled white vinegar or lemon juice to create a thick, bubbling paste.
  3. Spread the paste thickly over the rust rings left by cans or cast iron cookware.
  4. Allow the acidic paste to sit on the iron oxide for 10 to 15 minutes to break down the rust bond.
  5. Scrub the area firmly using a non-scratch sponge or microfiber cloth, always moving in the direction of the metal grain lines.
  6. Rinse the sink basin thoroughly with warm water and buff dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

What to avoid

  • Never use carbon steel wool pads on stainless steel sinks; microscopic steel fibers will embed in the sink surface and cause worse rust spots later.
  • Avoid chlorine bleach on stainless steel rust, which can cause permanent pitting corrosion.
  • Do not leave wet cast iron pans sitting in the sink overnight.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can a stainless steel sink actually rust by itself?
Stainless steel rarely rusts on its own due to its protective chromium oxide layer. Most 'rust spots' are external iron particles left behind by cast iron pans, tin cans, or wire wool pads that oxidized on the sink surface.
How do I prevent cast iron pan rust rings in the kitchen sink?
Never leave wet cast iron pans sitting inside the sink basin to soak; wash cast iron immediately, dry thoroughly on the stove, and use a silicone sink grid to elevate metal cookware off the sink floor.
