How to Remove Makeup Stains from Cotton Clothing
Scrape off excess makeup, blot with rubbing alcohol to dissolve pigments and waxy binders, treat with grease-cutting dish soap, and wash in warm water.
Context
Conditions that change the method
- Color-sensitive — Test rubbing alcohol on an inside seam first for brightly colored garments.
Use solvents safely around fabrics
Use rubbing alcohol in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or open flame. Thoroughly rinse solvents from the cotton fabric before putting it into a washing machine or dryer.
What you need
- Dish soap (cuts oils, waxes, and silicones in foundation and lipstick)
- Rubbing alcohol (dissolves cosmetic pigments)
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Dull knife or spoon (for scraping paste)
- Clean microfiber cloths or cotton rounds
- Gently scrape away any excess clumped makeup or lipstick with the edge of a dull knife or spoon, taking care not to push the makeup deeper into the cotton weave.
- Place a clean cloth inside the garment beneath the stain to catch transfers, then dab the spot with a cotton round moistened with rubbing alcohol.
- Apply a drop of concentrated dish soap directly to the makeup stain to break down the oily, waxy base.
- Gently massage the soap into the fibers with your fingers or a soft cloth, working from the outside of the stain inward.
- Rinse the area with warm running water from the back of the fabric to flush cosmetic oils out of the fibers.
- Launder the garment in the washing machine using regular laundry detergent on the warmest water setting allowed by the care label.
What to avoid
- Never rub fresh lipstick or liquid foundation with dry paper towels; rubbing spreads the wax-oil emulsion over a larger area.
- Avoid hot machine drying until you verify that the oil shadow and pigment are 100% removed.
- Do not use undiluted bleach directly on cosmetics containing titanium dioxide, which can cause yellow chemical discoloration.
Products
What to use
- Dish soapA mild alkaline soap that cuts grease and soap film. Dilute it in warm water. It is a cleaner, not a disinfectant claim, and it is not a substitute for a product labeled for grout mineral deposits.
- Rubbing alcohol70% to 91% isopropyl alcohol used as a fast-evaporating solvent to dissolve adhesive stickiness, ink pigments, and permanent marker marks.
- Liquid laundry detergentStandard liquid surfactant detergent used as a spot pre-treater to penetrate fabric weave and lift oily binders and tannin dyes.
- Microfiber clothA reusable cloth that lifts film and leftover moisture without scratching glass. Use a clean face of the cloth as residue comes off.

FAQ
Questions people ask
- Does cleaning change for oil-free foundation compared to traditional oil-based makeup?
- Oil-free foundations often use silicones and water-resistant polymers that also respond very well to dish soap and rubbing alcohol, as standard water-based washing cannot easily disperse them.
- Can I use micellar water or makeup remover wipes directly on clothing?
- Yes, micellar water works well on fresh makeup smudges on cotton. Apply a few drops to a clean cotton ball and gently dab from the outside inward, followed by a warm water rinse.
