How to Remove Sweat Stains from Cotton Clothes
Mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide and 1 part liquid dish soap, rub the paste into yellowed underarm fabric, let sit for 30–60 minutes to dissolve bonded aluminum salts, and wash in warm water.
Context
Conditions that change the method
- Color-sensitive — Peroxide can lighten some colored cottons; for dark shirts, substitute white vinegar and water for the peroxide.
Never use chlorine bleach on yellow armpit sweat stains
Chlorine bleach reacts with urea and aluminum antiperspirant compounds, causing stains to turn permanently yellow-brown or dark gray. If peroxide or detergent gets into eyes, flush immediately with cool water.
What you need
- Baking soda (4 tablespoons)
- 3% Hydrogen peroxide (2 tablespoons)
- Liquid dish soap (2 tablespoons)
- A soft nylon toothbrush or fingertips
- Warm water
- Turn the shirt inside out so the armpit seams and deodorant buildup are directly exposed.
- Mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda, 2 tablespoons of 3% hydrogen peroxide, and 2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap into a thick slurry.
- Spread the paste liberally over the discolored, stiff underarm fabric.
- Gently work the mixture into the weave using a soft toothbrush or your fingertips to penetrate bonded aluminum and sebum waxes.
- Let the garment sit undisturbed for 30 to 60 minutes while the oxygen and alkali lift oxidized yellowing.
- Rinse out the bulk of the paste with warm water, then wash the shirt in the washing machine with your regular detergent on a warm wash cycle. Air-dry completely.
What to avoid
- Never apply chlorine bleach directly to yellow sweat rings.
- Never iron over yellowed fabric before treatment — heat oxidizes body oils into permanent amber polymers.
- Avoid aggressive scrubbing that tears lightweight cotton t-shirt armpit seams.
Products
What to use
- Baking sodaA mild alkali that makes a paste for grout lines. It lifts film with light abrasion. Do not mix it with vinegar as a cleaning trick — the fizz is the two canceling each other out.
- Hydrogen peroxideA 3% mild oxidizing agent that lifts organic color compounds and protein stains like blood and wine without damaging most washable fabrics.
- Dish soapA mild alkaline soap that cuts grease and soap film. Dilute it in warm water. It is a cleaner, not a disinfectant claim, and it is not a substitute for a product labeled for grout mineral deposits.
- Liquid laundry detergentStandard liquid surfactant detergent used as a spot pre-treater to penetrate fabric weave and lift oily binders and tannin dyes.

FAQ
Questions people ask
- Why do armpit stains turn yellow and stiff on white cotton shirts?
- Clear sweat reacts with aluminum zirconium compounds present in commercial antiperspirants. When mixed with body sebum and dried repeatedly, it forms a crusty, yellow-tinted organometallic wax.
- How can I prevent yellow sweat stains from forming in the first place?
- Switch to an aluminum-free deodorant, allow antiperspirant to dry completely on skin before dressing, and wash shirts promptly after heavy workouts rather than leaving damp clothes in a dark hamper.
