How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Cotton Clothes
Blot excess wine with a clean cloth, flush from the back with cold water, apply a 3:1 mix of 3% hydrogen peroxide and liquid dish soap to bleach out anthocyanin pigments, let sit 20 minutes, and launder in cold water.
Context
Conditions that change the method
- Color-sensitive — On colored cotton garments, test peroxide on a concealed seam first, or use an oxygen bleach soak.
Do not mix peroxide or oxygen bleach with chlorine bleach
Mixing different bleaching chemicals releases hazardous gases and ruins fabric strength. If solutions contact eyes, flush immediately with cool clean water and seek medical advice if irritation continues.
What you need
- Clean white cloths or paper towels
- 3% Hydrogen peroxide
- Liquid dish soap
- Cold water
- Oxygen bleach powder (for colored or delicate cotton)
- Press a clean dry paper towel directly over the spilled wine. Blot firmly to absorb liquid — do not wipe or rub in circles.
- Flush the reverse side of the stain with cold running water to push wine pigments out of the cotton fibers.
- Mix 3 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide with 1 part liquid dish soap in a small cup.
- Sponge the mixture onto the red spot until saturated. The peroxide decolorizes anthocyanin chromophores while soap lifts grape skins and sugars.
- Allow the mixture to dwell for 20 to 30 minutes until the purple-red hue visibly fades.
- Rinse thoroughly with cold water and wash the garment on a cold cycle in the washing machine. Air-dry completely.
What to avoid
- Do not pour table salt on dry wine spills — salt can draw in moisture but also sets tannins if left to dry.
- Never apply hot water or hot iron steam to a red wine stain.
- Never tumble dry a shirt that still has a pale blue or gray ghost ring.
Products
What to use
- Hydrogen peroxideA 3% mild oxidizing agent that lifts organic color compounds and protein stains like blood and wine without damaging most washable fabrics.
- Dish soapA mild alkaline soap that cuts grease and soap film. Dilute it in warm water. It is a cleaner, not a disinfectant claim, and it is not a substitute for a product labeled for grout mineral deposits.
- Oxygen bleachSodium percarbonate powder that dissolves in warm water to release hydrogen peroxide, safely brightening colored fabrics and lifting oxidized wine, tea, and sweat stains.
- Liquid laundry detergentStandard liquid surfactant detergent used as a spot pre-treater to penetrate fabric weave and lift oily binders and tannin dyes.

FAQ
Questions people ask
- Does pouring white wine on red wine actually work?
- Pouring white wine dilutes the red pigment slightly, but it adds more wine sugars and acid to clean up. Cold tap water is cleaner, cheaper, and more effective for dilution.
- How do I remove dried red wine from a white cotton shirt?
- Dissolve 2 tablespoons of oxygen bleach in a gallon of warm water, submerge the entire shirt, and let it soak for 6 hours before machine washing cold.
