Conditions that change the method

  • water temperature — Use warm water for washing bedding to melt cosmetic waxes without setting heat-sensitive protein components.

How to do it

  1. Scrape off any thick, excess foundation or mascara from the pillowcase or sheet using the edge of a spoon or butter knife.

  2. Mix equal parts clear dish soap and rubbing alcohol in a small container to create a dual-action degreaser and pigment solvent.

  3. Dab the solution directly onto the makeup mark using a clean microfiber cloth or cotton ball, working from the outside of the stain inward.

  4. Allow the solution to penetrate the fibers for 10 to 15 minutes to dissolve stubborn cosmetic binders, silicones, and waxes.

  5. Flush the spot from the back side with warm running tap water to push the loosened makeup out of the fabric weave.

  6. Submerge the bedding in a tub or basin of warm water with one scoop of oxygen bleach for 30 minutes to eliminate any remaining dye shadows.

  7. Machine wash the bedding on a normal cycle with liquid laundry detergent, and hang to air dry to inspect under daylight.

What to avoid

  • Never rub vigorously across the stain, which forces waxy foundation deeper into the pillowcase threads.
  • Never place stained bedding in a hot dryer until all makeup pigments are completely removed.
  • Avoid using chlorine bleach on white microfiber or polyester blend sheets, which causes yellowing.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I use micellar water to clean foundation off a pillowcase quickly?
Yes. Micellar cleansing water works well for emergency spot-cleaning fresh foundation on a pillowcase, though laundering with laundry detergent is still recommended to remove oil residues.
How do I remove makeup from a real silk pillowcase without damage?
For pure mulberry silk, skip rubbing alcohol and oxygen bleach. Instead, gently spot-clean with a pH-neutral silk detergent or baby shampoo in cool water and lay flat to dry.
