How to Remove Hard Water Stains from a Showerhead

Fill a plastic bag with distilled white vinegar, tie it over the showerhead so the nozzles stay submerged for 30 to 60 minutes, scrub the face gently, and run hot water to flush. Keep vinegar off stone tile and do not poke the jets wider.

Conditions that change the method

  • Delicate surface — Keep vinegar off marble or limestone walls and off specialty finishes the maker says not to soak. Do not leave undiluted vinegar on oil-rubbed bronze overnight.

What you need

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • A plastic bag large enough to cover the spray face
  • A rubber band or twist tie
  • An old soft toothbrush
  • A microfiber cloth
  1. Look at the spray face. White crust in the nozzles and a crooked spray pattern are mineral clogs — not soap film on the chrome body.
  2. Pour enough distilled white vinegar into a plastic bag to submerge the nozzles. Slip the bag over the showerhead and cinch it with a rubber band so the face stays wet.
  3. Leave it 30 to 60 minutes. Heavy scale can sit a few hours. Do not walk away overnight on specialty finishes.
  4. Take the bag down. Rub rubber nozzles with a finger. Brush metal faces with a soft toothbrush. Do not drill or widen the jets.
  5. Run hot water for a minute or two to flush loosened scale out of the head.
  6. Wipe the head dry. If flow is still weak, unscrew the head, soak the whole unit in a bowl of vinegar, rinse, and reinstall. Check the washer and thread tape if it drips.

What to avoid

  • Do not poke the nozzles with a pin or drill — that can ruin the flow restrictor.
  • Do not copy the faucet cloth wrap; the scale here is inside the spray face.
  • Do not let vinegar drip onto marble or limestone walls.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How often should I soak the showerhead in hard-water areas?
When the spray pattern goes crooked or monthly if the water is very hard. A short vinegar bag soak is enough for light scale; do not leave specialty finishes in acid overnight.
The spray is still weak after a vinegar soak. What next?
Unscrew the head and soak the whole unit, including any inlet screen. Do not drill the nozzles. If flow is still poor, the restrictor or the head itself may need replacement.
