How to Remove Cooking Grease from a Range Hood Filter
Submerge the metal grease filters in a basin of boiling water mixed with 1/2 cup of baking soda and a squirt of dish soap, soak for 15 minutes to melt the gummy grease, gently brush with a nylon brush, rinse in hot water, and air dry completely.
Context
Conditions that change the method
- Delicate surface — Aluminum mesh filters discolor if exposed to harsh caustic lye or ammonia; use only mild baking soda and dish soap.
Avoid scalding from boiling water and never clean charcoal filters in water
What you need
- Baking soda — 1/2 cup
- Dish soap
- Nylon brush or soft sponge
- Boiling water and a heat-safe basin or sink
- Microfiber cloth
How to do it
Press the latch or slide the metal filter release tabs to detach the grease filters from the underside of the range hood.
Plug your kitchen sink or set out a large heat-safe roasting pan, and fill it with boiling or very hot tap water.
Add a good squirt of grease-cutting liquid dish soap and slowly sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda into the water (the mixture will fizz and foam gently).
Submerge the greasy metal mesh filters completely into the bubbling hot bath. If the filters are too tall for the sink, submerge one half for 10 minutes, then flip.
Let the filters soak for 15 to 20 minutes as the hot alkaline bath liquefies and detaches gummy, yellowed oil from deep mesh layers.
Gently scrub both sides of the filter with a non-scratch nylon brush to clear away remaining softened grease plugs.
Rinse the filters thoroughly under running hot tap water until the water runs clear and no slippery soap residue remains.
Shake off excess water, prop the filters upright on a clean microfiber towel to air dry completely, and clip them back into the range hood.
What to avoid
- Never use ammonia or caustic oven cleaners on aluminum mesh filters, which blacken and corrode aluminum.
- Avoid washing aluminum filters in a dishwasher with high-alkaline dishwasher pods, which tarnishes the metal finish.
- Never reinstall wet filters, as trapped moisture inside the range hood creates odors and electrical issues.

FAQ
Questions people ask
- How often should range hood grease filters be cleaned?
- For typical household cooking, soak and clean metal mesh filters once every 1 to 3 months. If you fry foods or cook with a wok frequently, clean them monthly to maintain good exhaust airflow and prevent grease fire hazards.
- Can I wash metal range hood filters in the dishwasher?
- Stainless steel baffle filters are completely dishwasher-safe. Aluminum mesh filters can be washed in a dishwasher on a gentle cycle, but high-heat drying and caustic detergents can cause white spotting or oxidation over time.
