How to Remove Coffee Stains from Upholstery
Blot the spill dry, read the W / WS / S / X cleaning code, and on water-safe fabric dab warm water mixed with white vinegar and a drop of dish soap from the outside in. Do not soak the cushion foam. Stop and use a solvent or a pro cleaner on S or X codes.
Context
Conditions that change the method
- Color-sensitive — Test the vinegar mix on a hidden seam first. Acid can shift unstable dyes.
- Delicate surface — Do not flood the cushion. Trapped water in polyurethane foam wicks the coffee back up and can grow mildew.
Do not mix vinegar with chlorine bleach
Acid plus leftover chlorine bleach releases toxic gas. If vinegar or soap contacts eyes or irritated skin, rinse with cool clean water and get medical advice if irritation continues.
What you need
- Clean white cloths or paper towels
- Distilled white vinegar
- Clear liquid dish soap
- Warm water
- The sofa’s cleaning-code tag (W, WS, S, or X)
- Press dry white cloths firmly into the spill. Lift, fold to a dry face, and press again. Do not rub — rubbing drives brown tannins into the foam.
- Read the cleaning code on the cushion tag. W or WS can take a water-based spotter. S needs a dry-cleaning solvent. X is vacuum only — stop and call a pro.
- On W or WS fabric, mix 1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar and 1 teaspoon of dish soap into 2 cups of warm water. Dab a drop on a hidden seam and wait a few minutes to confirm the dye does not shift.
- If the cover unzips, slide a dry towel between the fabric and the foam so liquid cannot migrate into the core.
- Dip a white cloth in the mixture and dab from the outer ring inward until the brown fades. Keep the fabric damp, not wet. Let it sit 5 to 10 minutes.
- Blot with a cloth barely misted with clean water, then press dry towels under a weight until the spot is only slightly damp. Air-dry fully before sitting on it.
What to avoid
- Do not pour cups of water or club soda into the cushion — extra liquid soaks the foam and the stain often wicks back.
- Do not use bar soap on fresh coffee; tallow soaps can set tannins brown.
- Do not treat an S or X code with this water-based mix.

FAQ
Questions people ask
- Does coffee with milk need a different method than black coffee?
- The same mix still applies. Dish soap is there for the cream fat; vinegar is there for the tannins. Blot more thoroughly on milky spills so fat does not sit in the foam.
- Why did the brown ring come back the next day?
- Liquid left in the foam wicked back up as the surface dried. Press dry towels under a weight until the spot is only slightly damp, then let it air-dry fully.
