Conditions that change the method

  • Delicate surface — Verify care labels; dry-clean-only fabrics (silk, velvet) or acrylic-backed blackout drapery should not be submerged in hot water.

What you need

  • Oxygen bleach powder (color-safe sodium percarbonate)
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Soft nylon brush
  • Large basin or washing machine
  • Outdoor clothesline or drying rack
  1. Remove curtain hooks and rings, take the drapery outdoors, and gently brush away loose surface mold spores using a soft dry nylon brush.
  2. Fill a bathtub or large wash basin with warm water and dissolve 1/2 cup of oxygen bleach powder completely.
  3. Submerge the washable curtains fully in the oxygen bleach solution and allow to soak for 1 to 2 hours to oxidize fungal hyphae and lift dark stains.
  4. Transfer the curtains to the washing machine and launder on a gentle cycle using liquid laundry detergent and the warmest water temperature safe for the fabric.
  5. Add 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar to the final rinse cycle to strip alkaline residues, soften fibers, and destroy any lingering spore cells.
  6. Hang the curtains outside in bright, direct sunlight and breezy air; natural solar UV light acts as a powerful secondary mold sanitizer.

What to avoid

  • Never brush moldy curtains inside the house, which scatters millions of live fungal spores across indoor carpets and furniture.
  • Avoid chlorine bleach on colored drapery, which creates permanent bleached streaks.
  • Do not re-hang curtains in a damp room while still slightly wet; ensure 100% bone-dryness before reinstalling.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I use this exact method for black mold on fabric shower curtain liners?
Yes. Fabric polyester or cotton shower curtain liners respond exceptionally well to oxygen bleach soaking and machine washing with vinegar to clear bottom edge mold.
Why do my window curtains grow mold and how can I stop it?
Curtain mold is caused by winter window condensation dripping onto bottom hems. Wipe window sills dry regularly, increase room ventilation, and pull curtains slightly away from cold glass.
