How to Remove Hard Water Stains from a Faucet

Wrap a vinegar-soaked cloth around the crusty faucet base and spout, let it dwell for 15 minutes to dissolve calcium, gently scrub with a soft nylon brush, and dry completely with a microfiber cloth.

Context

Conditions that change the method

  • Delicate surface — Avoid acid contact with natural stone countertops surrounding the faucet base.
  • Poor ventilation — Keep the bathroom door open or run the exhaust fan while using vinegar.

What you need

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • A microfiber cloth or cleaning rag
  • A soft nylon brush or old soft toothbrush
  • A rubber band (for securing a soak around the spout tip)
  1. Wipe away loose surface dirt with a damp cloth so the vinegar can directly reach mineral crust.
  2. Soak a small cloth in distilled white vinegar and wrap it snugly around the crusted faucet base, handles, or spout.
  3. For clogged aerators, fill a small plastic bag with vinegar, submerge the spout tip, and fasten it with a rubber band.
  4. Let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. Rewet if the wrap dries out.
  5. Remove the wrap and brush loosened scale gently with a soft nylon brush.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and buff dry immediately with a clean microfiber cloth.

What to avoid

  • Never use steel wool, wire brushes, or abrasive scouring pads — they destroy chrome and matte coatings.
  • Never let vinegar pool on unsealed marble, granite, or limestone around the faucet deck.
  • Do not leave vinegar on delicate brass or PVD finishes overnight; 15–30 minutes is sufficient.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Can I use vinegar on matte black or oil-rubbed bronze faucets?
Matte and dark PVD finishes are more sensitive to acid. Test a concealed spot first and reduce dwell time to 5–10 minutes. If uncertain, use warm water and mild dish soap with a soft microfiber cloth.
Should I unscrew the aerator to soak it?
If water flow is uneven or sputtering, unscrewing the aerator screen and soaking it in warm vinegar for 30 minutes cleans the internal mesh faster than surface wiping.
