Context

Conditions that change the method

  • Delicate surface — Never add vinegar or citric acid if your dishwasher detergent contains chlorine bleach.

What you need

  • Distilled white vinegar or food-grade citric acid powder
  • Baking soda (for deodorizing and polishing interior bottom)
  • Toothpick or small wire (for clearing clogged spray arm nozzles)
  • Microfiber cloth
  1. Empty the dishwasher completely of all dishes, cutlery, and dish detergent.
  2. Unlock and pull out the cylindrical filter assembly at the bottom of the tub; rinse away trapped food debris and hard water scale under running water.
  3. Inspect the rotating upper and lower spray arms and use a wooden toothpick to dislodge any hard mineral crystals clogging the water spray nozzles.
  4. Place an upright dishwasher-safe bowl containing 2 cups of distilled white vinegar on the upper rack (or place 2 tablespoons of citric acid in the main detergent cup).
  5. Close the door and run the hottest, longest wash cycle available (such as Heavy Wash or Sanitize) without detergent.
  6. When the cycle completes, wipe the rubber door gaskets and interior door edges dry with a clean microfiber cloth.

What to avoid

  • Do not pour acid into the rinse aid dispenser, which can degrade rubber dispenser seals over time.
  • Never wash fine crystal, pewter, or copper during an acid descaling cycle.
  • Avoid regular foaming liquid dish soap in a dishwasher, which produces massive flood suds.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How often should I run a descaling cycle in my dishwasher?
In areas with moderate-to-hard water, running a monthly citric acid or white vinegar cycle keeps spray nozzles open and prevents heating elements from burning out prematurely.
Will cleaning the dishwasher remove white cloudy film from glassware?
Yes. Descaling the interior removes mineral residue circulating in wash water. Adding rinse aid and water-softening dishwasher salt also prevents mineral deposits on glasses.
